Discover the wild and romantic winter landscape of the Simplon pass by foot. The historic alpine pass is opened and accessible even in winter. The winter hiking trail is a circuit which starts at the summit of the Simplon pass on an altitude level of 1992 m.
This winter hike departs from Simplon pass, a historic crossing point between Switzerland and Italy, and heads in the direction of the village of Simplon Dorf. It is best to choose a day when conditions are ideal, so that you can be sure that the path is well prepared. You will pass through several wilderness areas with wonderful views before you reach the finishing point of this hike, where the Barralhaus and Alte Spittel stand. The Barralhaus is an impressive and intriguing H-shaped building which was originally built for hosting seminaries and was then used by the Swiss army. As for the Alte Spittel, it is in fact a former hospice, built in 1650 by Kaspar Jodok Stockalper. When you arrive at this part of the hike, you can either end your journey here by heading to the nearby bus stop or continue following the hiking trail until you arrive at the Simplon pass again.
Postbus stops are located at several waypoints. There are restaurants on the Simplon Pass:
