The route takes you from the idyllic Riffelalp and through the Arven forest.  First, you pass the Riffelalp Resort.  The Grand Hotel Riffelalp once stood here and was known as the ‘playground of European high society’  from 1884 to the nineteen-sixties when, in 1961, a huge fire destroyed the fabled hotel.  In 1988 the building made a come-back as the Riffelalp Resort.  At the Alphitta restaurant you enter the forest where a path takes you downwards to the Chämi Hitta restaurant.  This is the perfect place to try a slice of home-made cake or one of their many coffee creations.  The path zigzags down towards Furi.  Follow the snow-covered Furistrasse road to Findelbach.  If you’re still feeling energetic you can walk on down to Zermatt, otherwise a Gornergrat train will take you comfortably from Findelbach right back to the centre of Zermatt.

Author’s recommendation

Linger a while at the Riffelalp and spoil yourself with a warming cup of coffee or a slice of home-made cake on one of the terraces.

Safety information

  • Carry a map with you. Download the full trail description with a large scale map by clicking on "Print" at the top right of the page.
  • Use only marked trails and follow all signs and instructions - for your own safety, to protect grazing animals and in respect of wildlife.
  • Close gates after passing through.

  • Carry additional sun protection. UV rays at high altitudes can be very strong, even in overcast weather.
  • Plan your trek carefully: take into account the required fitness level of all participants, weather forecasts and seasonality.
  • Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly and without warning. Appropriate clothing and sufficient provisions (food and drink) are very important. If the weather is unstable, it is better to turn back early.

Turn-by-turn directions

The tour starts at Riffelalp station.  First you walk down to the Riffelalp Resort.  The path actually forks shortly to the right after Riffelalp station but it’s worth making a small detour over the idyllic Riffelalp.  Just above the Alphitta restaurant the path goes to the right and takes you into the forest.  After a left-hand bend you go down to the Chämi Hitta restaurant where you traverse the ski piste.  Now the path descends a little more steeply towards Furi.  After about 1.3 km you reach the snow-covered road linking Zermatt and Furi and you can follow it down towards Zermatt.  After about 700 m the path again forks right and you walk beside a railway siding, taking you to Findelbach station.  From here there are regular connections on a Gornergrat train to take you back to Zermatt.
