Starting from the Aiguilles Rouges hut, the route starts with a single track through a rocky high altitude landscape. After a first steep descent to the Lac Bleu in Arolla, the trail gently descends to Evolène. You will be tempted to spend more time among the village’s traditional wooden buildings, but from Evolène, going forward means going up, and a 1,600-metre ascent awaits you before reaching the Becs de Bosson hut. From Evolène, pass through pleasant little villages and larch forests until reaching the Pravouarbote house, where the path makes a sharp bend to follow a dirt track to the Pas de Lovégno. A final climb leads you to the modern, comfortable Becs de Bosson hut with its fireplace and local specialities awaiting athletes no matter what the weather.

Author’s recommendation

Make a stop at the yak farm in la Giette, near Les Haudères, and meet these exotic animals.

Safety information

Use of the trails and the information on this website is at your own risk. Local conditions may entail changes to routes. Valais/Wallis Promotion accepts no liability for the accuracy and completeness of information on this website.

For all trails:

  • Use marked trails only, and take note of all signposting – for both your own safety as well as that of grazing animals and to avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Close gates after passing through.
  • Please treat other trail users, as well as the plants and animals, with respect.

For mountain trails:

Take extra care protecting yourself from the sun at high altitudes. UV radiation can be exceptionally strong, even in cloudy weather.

Plan your trail carefully: take the fitness level of each participant, weather forecast and season into consideration.

Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, without warning. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential, along with adequate supplies of food and water. In case of uncertain weather conditions, turn back in good time.

Inform others of the route you plan to take. Whenever possible, avoid going alone.

Take note of warning signs indicating the constant danger in river beds and along watercourses below dams and reservoirs: water levels may rise rapidly without warning.

Turn-by-turn directions

Departing from the Aiguilles Rouges hut, this leg takes place in two parts. The first part consists of a steep descent to the village of Evolène, where the Lac Bleu and the small village of La Giette are points of interest worth stopping to admire. From Evolène, the second section is the most beautiful part of the ascent. Follow the path that climbs towards Eison. The slope becomes much steeper from Pravouarbote to Pas de Lovégno. From this pass, continue your ascent along a gentler slope up to the Becs de Bosson hut.
