The first stage of the Stockalperweg leads from Brig to the Simplon Pass.

The historic Alpine crossing runs along four generations of roads (Roman, Stockalper, Napoleon, National Road). Combined with cultural highlights and an impressive alpine flora in an imposing mountain backdrop, the Stockalperweg is a real experience.

The sights along the historic ViaStockalper tell many stories. So that you can fully enjoy these experiences, we recommend that you walk the route in 3 stages.

Turn-by-turn directions

Passing the Stockalperschloss in Brig, the path leads along the so-called "Römerweg" through open meadowland via the hamlet of Brei to the "Chräjubielwald". The steep step to "Chalchofe" is overcome in two hairpin bends. The slope path to Schallberg was built by Stockalper in 1667 and offers a view of the impressive Saltina Gorge. After the descent to the floodplain landscape in the "Grund", the path follows the Tafernabach over five wooden footbridges to the former Taferna Inn. Along artfully designed serpentines you cross the last steep step to the top of the pass.
