7th stage: In the footsteps of the Pope. From the Oratory of St. Bernard you follow the D0 hiking trail for a while to Alpe Pragio. This follows the old mule track, which led from Domodossola to the Monscera and was used by Pope Gregory X on his return journey from Lyon in 1275, but also served Baron Stockalper as an alternative route to the Gondo gorges. You then continue on the Sentiero Italia (SI) hiking route to the beautiful valley basin of the Vallaro (hut), and then climb back up to the Alpe Laghetto refuge, the stage destination of the Via Alpina.
Author’s recommendation
