This hike gives you two distinct options.  The first would be a relatively moderate day but very nice day, starting from Saas Almagell (you can hike there, but it’s convenient to go by bus), hiking up to Almagelleralp hut for lunch or refreshments, then hiking back down the same way.

For a longer day, you’ll continue above the hut on a high traverse, above treeline and through the avalanche fences with gorgeous views of the entire valley.  This brings you into a side-valley to the north, where the Kreuzboden gondola brings you down to the valley floor to Saas Grund.

Either way, you’ll catch a bus back up to Saas Fee.  Be careful with timing, as the last gondola at Kreuzboden leaves at 16:00! Your Saastal Card will cover all transportation.

Overall, this hike is not very long, but be sure to factor in time for the bus to Saas Almagell and for the gondola from Kreuzboden to Saas Grund and bus back from there (combined, this might take an hour). It will be a fairly full day.

Tips and hints

If it rains... This is a fine rainy-day walk to Allmagelleralp and back. In bad weather, skip the high, steep traverse above treeline to Kreuzboden. The trail from Saas Fee to Saas Almagell is pleasant and wooded and makes a fine extension if you want a longer day.

Turn-by-turn directions

  • Although you can walk from Saas Fee down to Saas Almagell, it’s easiest to start with the bus. Buses generally leave the bus terminal twice each hour and take 16 minutes to Saas Almagell.  The trail leaves from the big empty lot behind the bus station, leading downhill, and takes about 40 minutes.
  • From the main square in Saas Almagell, you’ll find the trail posted to Allmagelleralp across from the Primo store, heading up a narrow paved road to the east. The trail leads around a cluster of old houses at the top of town and into the larch forest. You’ll keep right (uphill) at the first trail fork, and then left at the next, following signs to Allmagelleralp (a right here takes you to Allmagelleralp via Spissgraben, but on a more difficult trail).
  • Your trail takes a bridge across the Allmageller stream, continues uphill through the woods, and then starts to flatten as you enter the valley. You’ll reach a hut and restaurant at Allmagelleralp about 1 hr 40 minutes from Saas Almagell.
  • With the Allmagellerhorn to the south, Portjengrat ridge to the east, and Weissmies to the north, this quiet valley is hemmed in by large mountains in all directions. Allmagelleralp makes a fine stop for lunch, with a nice outdoor terrace and plenty of seating inside.
  • Easy day: For an easy day today, you’ll take your time at the hut, and simply return the way you came, catching a bus from Saas Almagell to Saas Fee.
  • Longer day: For a longer day, there is a beautiful high-level balcony walk to the north to Kreuzboden in the Trift valley. This will take about 3 hrs and there are no services or opt-outs enroute until you reach Kreuzboden. Although there’s nothing particularly difficult about this stretch, the trail is often narrow and traverses a very steep slope, with dizzying views into the valley below. You’ll want nice weather and a good head for heights to be comfortable along this trail.
  • It starts out just below Allmagelleralp, angling slightly uphill on the trail to Kreuzboden. The views across the valley are tremendous as the trail turns the corner and continues gently uphill past a ridge called Weissflue. You’ll pass through some avalanche fences, and cross a couple of steep boulder fields. Take care and take your time.
  • The trail tops out at 2500 meters, with some short up and down stretches, and then after crossing the Triftgrätji ridge, begins a steady, short descent to Kreuzboden, a large gondola station on the Hohsaas line.
  • The area around Kreuzboden is built up in a rather unattractive way, but the gondola, which runs continuously (until 16:15) will be a welcome ride down. Use your Saastal Card for free transport down. There are also “Monster Trotti” rentals here... large fat-tired scooters with brakes, but no pedals, that you can rent for the thrilling 11 km descent to the valley.
