This hike starts in the Valais village of Inden, which can be reached by bus or on foot from Leuk or Leukerbad. As far back as the late Middle Ages, the Romans used this route to reach the thermal springs in Leukerbad, the most productive in the Alps. The hike starts at the former train station and follows the Dala-Raspille cultural trail and the route of the former Leuk-Leukerbad railroad (1915-1967). The trail continues up past a mountain flank, which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe described in 1779 as "not a dangerous trail, but one that looks very frightening". Despite being exposed in places, the path is wide, technically easy and partly secured with wire ropes. You will be rewarded with a sweeping view of the wild Dala valley and the opposite side. Cross the German-French language border, the Raspille river, and follow the trail down to the village of Miège, where the bus will take you back to Sierre.

Safety information

Use of the trails and the information on this website is at hikers’ own risk. Local conditions may entail changes to routes. My Leukerbad accepts no liability for the accuracy and completeness of information on this website.

For all hikes:

  • Bring a map. Download full description of this route including large-scale map by clicking on «Print» icon, top right of this page.
  • Use marked trails only, and observe all signposting – for your own safety, to safeguard grazing animals and to avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Close gates after passing through.
  • Please be considerate to other trail users, and to the plants and animals.
  • Do not leave any waste in nature.

For mountain hikes:

  • Take extra care protecting yourself from the sun at altitude. UV radiation can be exceptionally strong, even in cloudy weather.
  • Plan hike carefully: take into consideration fitness level of each participant, weather forecast and season.
  • Weather conditions can change quickly in the mountains, without warning. Appropriate clothing is therefore essential, along with adequate supplies of food and water. In uncertain weather, turn back in good time.

For high-altitude hikes:

  • Inform others of the route you plan to take. Whenever possible, avoid going alone.
  • Do not venture onto glaciers without a mountain guide.
  • Take note of the warning signs that point out the constant danger in river beds and along watercourses below dams and reservoirs: water levels may rise rapidly without warning.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike leads slightly downhill from the former train station in Inden along the cultural hiking trail and the route of the former Leuk-Leukerbad railroad. From here, the trail climbs steeply, directly along the vertical mountain flank. Once at the edge of the "Schattuflüe" gorge, the trail continues through the Varner forest and along a forest path to the hamlet of Taschunieru. You will arrive at the entrance to the Varner Suone (Grossi Wasserleitu) after a short climb. The trail follows a straight stretch of the Suone, before crossing the Varneralp rock fall. After crossing the Raspille River and the French-German language border at La Proprija, the trail descends to Miège. Continue walking to Sierre train station or take the bus.
