Das alte Gotthard-Hospiz steht auf der Liste des europäischen Kulturerbes und ist Etappenziel auf dem Vier-Quellen-Weg
Das alte Gotthard-Hospiz (2100 m ü. M.) ist seit Jahrhunderten Sinnbild für die Verbindung der Kulturen Nord- und Südeuropas. Es stammt vermutlich aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und ist das geschichtsträchtigste Gebäude auf dem Gotthard. Berühmte Persönlichkeiten waren schon hier: Goethe zum Beispiel, Mendelssohn und Wagner.
Im Laufe der Zeit wurde das Hospiz mehrfach umgebaut. Nach dem Niedergang der Lawine wurde es im 18. Jahrhundert als eigentliches Kapuzinerhospiz neu aufgebaut und dann nach und nach vergrössert. Anfangs des 20. Jahrhunderts brannte es nieder, wurde aber wieder aufgebaut. 2010 wurde das Hospiz nach einer dreijährigen Renovation wieder eröffnet.
